If your on a zero waste journey, one thing to be cautious of is Palm Oil as an ingredient in your products. Palm Oil is found in roughly 50% of all packaged foods, cosmetics, and cleaning products, and contributes to major deforestation, habitat loss, animal cruelty, and loss of biodiversity in countries where it is produced.
Global Palm Oil demand is fueling deforestation. Millions of acres of rainforest are cut down yearly, killing endangered species, uprooting local communities, and contributing to the release of climate-warming gases. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production.
Palm Oil is also masked by other names such as Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Palm Kernel Oil, Vitamin A Palmitate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate (Can also be from coconut), or Sodium Lauryl Sulphates (can also be from ricinus oil). If you must buy a product containing Palm Oil, make sure it is RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified. That means it is sustainable and does not contribute to the factors listed above.
