Our skin faces the world everyday. It absorbs the sun, it shows our emotions, it keeps our insides safely tucked away and for all its hard work it deserves to be spoiled every now and then.

So the products you put on your skin need to be good quality products. Made from natural, sustainable ingredients designed to moisturize and protect your skin. To start 2022 on the right track, we’ve put together a sustainable skin care routine that does just that!

Each product is made from just a few natural ingredients and all come in sustainable packaging from companies that are trying to reduce our impact on this earth.

When you think of a skin care routine, everyone has a different idea. You might go right to a 10 step routine or you might be thinking 1 step. You have to do whatever is best for you and fits into your life, while still making sure your skin gets the care and protection it needs.

Routines can (and should) vary from day to night, season to season, and even skin type to skin type. We’ve created a routine that's one size fits all— if you don’t get to every step every time no biggie. If you want to slim it down and remove a couple steps, do it! Try to get in what you can and make sure to do the important ones. But most importantly, create a sustainable skincare routine that works for you and your lifestyle.

The most important part of creating any kind of routine and making it sustainable is making sure that it works for you: your lifestyle, your budget.

Creating A Sustainable Skin Care Routine

1. Wash The Impurities Away

Very important, do not skip this step. It’s important to wash your face morning and night to remove any dirt, debris, and bacteria that’s accumulated on your skin. (Yes, even in the morning). Unless you have a state of the art air purification system and sleep with a new pillowcase every night. Then you can probably skip this step in the AM.

To use:

This facial bar can be used both morning and night and is suitable for all skin types. Charcoal helps to draw out bacteria and impurities, oatmeal exfoliates it away, and soothing butters help hydrate.

Pro Tip:

If your skin is very dry in the morning, try skipping the soap (despite what we just said) and spritz water on your face instead, continue with the rest of the routine as normal.

2. Optional: Exfoliate (Loofah Scrub)

Even though the bar above has some exfoliation to it, it’s not always enough. If you find your skin doesn’t ‘feel’ clean or you want more exfoliation, opt for these Loofah Facial Discs. It’s a mini loofah with a 2.5 inch diameter, perfect for some facial exfoliation wherever you need it most.

To use:

AM & PM — Apply face wash to face, rub in then lightly rub loofah across your face lightly in small circular motions. Start with light pressure and increase as needed. Compost after use, replace every 2-3 months, and store in a dry place. *test loofah on a small part of your skin first.*

3. Optional: Mask It Up

Face masks are often associated with self-care but they’re really beneficial for your skin! People in the movies are always walking around in robes, slippers, cucumbers on their eyes, and face masks in place. While masks are great for self-care, they really don’t have to be and can be a part of your routine 1-2 times per week. Any place you have 10-15 minutes to spare (we’re nighttime maskers) is the perfect time for the Glow Dust Facial Mask. Made from kaolin clay, coconut milk, and organic turmeric — an amazing anti-inflammatory — this mask deep cleans pores and evens out your skin tone all while being perfect even for sensitive skin!

To use:

Mix 1 tbsp. of powder with 1.5 tsp. of water. Apply to clean face for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

4. Tone & Protect

Upcircle Face Toner in Bottle next to packaging box

Toner is the oft-overlooked middle child of a skincare routine. The name ‘tone’ is ambiguous, which also probably contributes to people skipping this step. Where toners of the past were harsh and TBH a little painful, toners of the present day are designed to shrink the appearance of pores while hydrating, moisturizing, protecting, and even refreshing the skin, which is exactly what this toner from Upcycle Beauty does!

To use:

AM & PM — After cleansing, apply to fingertips or cleansing pad and apply to skin. It can also be used as a mist at any time to revitalize and refresh. If you skip the exfoliation and mask, this step comes right after #1.

5. Treat & Hydrate With A Serum

The Jelly Serum Facial Bar from Dew Mighty is a solid square that you apply directly to your skin. This serum is not only lightweight, hydrating, balancing, and calming, it uses no plastic and is 100% zero waste! Vitamins and Antioxidants come together to create the perfect solid serum for a variety of skin types, including sensitive skin. Shipped in paper packaging that is recyclable or compostable, the serum itself is kept in a reusable tin that can be used to store refills.

To use:

AM & PM — After toning, swipe bar directly on face (for dry skin) as needed. For oily skin, massage bar in hands to collect serum, then apply to face.

6. Optional: Extra Moisture

If your skin needs a bit more hydration than the Dew Mighty Jelly bar can provide, try pairing it with this All Cream from Fat & The Moon. This cream combines the power of organic Shea butter with the hydration of Sunflower Oil and soothing Aloe Vera. These ingredients come together to create the perfect moisturizer that is hydrating for all skin types. A little goes a long way so dab it on extra dry areas or use all over face if needed!

To use:

AM & PM — Apply a small amount to fingers, rub together and apply to face or areas where needed. As an oil based moisturizer a small amount will go far and this jar could last months!

7. Sunscreen (AM Only)

No skincare routine is complete without Sunscreen no matter if you’re planning on going outside or not. This reef-safe sunscreen is hypoallergenic and provides UVA-UVB true broad spectrum protection. It comes in a compostable stick that’s easy to apply and dispose of and should be worn under makeup every day — even for those who live in cold climates.

To use:

Apply stick directly to nose, cheeks, forehead and rub in as needed, or rub fingers across bar and apply using fingers.

8. Eye & Lip Balm (PM Mostly)

Buju Skin undereye and lip balm in cardboard tube with open lid next to it.

This balm can be used both morning and night if you really want, but it's multifunctionality provides some versatility. You can use it on your eyes at night and your lips in the morning or vice versa! The skin under your eyes is thin and needs to be treated a little more delicately — enter this balm made from skin superfoods such as Aloe, Vitamin E, and Shea Butter. It deeply moisturizes helping to diminish the look of fine lines and aging over time and the simple ingredients means it can provide lip hydration as well.

To use:

Swipe the tube under eyes/lips or gently dab the cream under eyes (try not to pull on the skin too much).
