Description

The Hungry Bin is a clean, simple, easy-to-use, continuous flow-through worm composter designed to make reducing waste as easy as possible. No more cranking or lifting heavy bins, as the worms convert organic waste into castings and nutrient-rich liquid and all you need to do is harvest the castings from the tray when they’re ready.

Hungry Bin processes up to 4.4 lbs. of waste per day. Its unique lifted design helps keep vermin out and makes loading easier on you.

Size: 24” x 26” x 37” and 27 Lbs

What’s Included: Assembly instruction manual is included with a 16-week feeding timeline from installation and an owner’s manual with troubleshooting and illustrations.

What You’ll Need: Compost worms (2000 recommended) and bedding (recommended free draining compost soil or coconut coir).

Set Up: Fill the bin with moist bedding material ¾ of the way. Fill the bin with about 200 grams (.45 lbs.) of live compost worms. Add finely chopped food scraps up to about 1 inch. Cover with damp newspaper.

Adding Food and Waste: Adding waste to the Hungry Bin is as easy as throwing away scraps; simply toss your food or compostable scraps into the bin and let the worms do the rest! Make sure not to feed the worms foods they don’t like, like:

  • Citrus or acidic fruit skin
  • Spicy food
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Capsicums
  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Processed wheat products
  • Shiny paper
  • Fats
  • Oils

You can add up to 2.5 cm of food per day, but make sure not to add more food if the uneaten scraps are more than 5 cm deep.

More detailed instructions are included in the Hungry Bin owner’s manual.

Harvesting Castings: You should only harvest castings when the bin is about ¾ full. Filling the Hungry Bin to capacity may take up to 8 weeks. If you remove the castings too early, when you unlatch the bottom of the container its contents may fall out.

When you’re ready to harvest your castings, start by removing the drip tray and disposing of the liquid. Next, release the latches on the floor of the bin and lower the floor from the bottom of the bin. Then, tip the floor upsides down and remove the castings. Lastly, you may rinse the floor with some water before replacing it back into the lower body and securing the latches.

Detailed directions for harvesting are included in your owner’s manual.

Extra Information: Hungry Bins are best suited in temperate climates. If you live in a climate prone to extreme heat or cold, Hungry Bin is best kept in a protected location, like a basement or garage.

The Hungry Bin is manufactured from food grade polypropylene with organic colorants and between 5% and 15% recycled content. While it was designed to last, the Hungry Bin is fully recyclable.
