An Ultimate List of Zero Waste Alternatives

Once upon countless times in a land not far away, a beautiful princess found herself in dire need of supplies for her palace. Upon hearing of this, her Prince Charming – always a sucker for puppy dog eyes – immediately embarked on a journey across the kingdom until he reached the nearest WasteMart. Here turned bearing an abundance of gifts for his fair lady, plastic single-use supplies as far as the eye could see. Of course, as is always the case with cheap plastic disposables, the perceived “convenience” came with a curse. The princess found her palace waste bins quickly filling up day-by-day, and the trash collector came week after week to “magically” make it disappear, and they all lived happily ever after...?

OK…so I took some artistic liberties with a few minor details and added a make-believe ending (I’m a hopeless romantic, so sue me). But this tale is based on a true story for millions of Americans every day, and the reason we have a royal pain of a waste problem facing our country.

  • The average American throws out 4.5 pounds of trash per day / 235 pounds plastic per year.
  • Nearly 27 million tons of non-biodegradable plastic are buried in U.S.landfills each year.
  • Over 18 million tons of paper products / 12 million tons of wood enter U.S. landfills each year.
  • The U.S. accounts for 88-242 million pounds of ocean plastic pollution annually.
  • Over 1 million seabirds / 100,000 sea mammals are killed every year due to ocean pollution.

Statistics like these can swiftly turn our fairy tale into an American horror story, if we don’t act now. Thank goodness we have a hero in the Zero Waste Store to help us stop the Wicked Waste of the West from completely destroying Mother Earth. Let’s break out of the plastic spell we’ve been put under and arm ourselves with the Ultimate List of Zero Waste Swaps. Together, we can win the fight for a greener future and write the sustainable storybook ending that our planet deserves.
